Sample Packaged Tour Itinerary

The Art Experience in the Blackstone Valley

The Blackstone River is the centerpiece of the 400,000 acre Blackstone River Valley. One of 14 American Heritage Rivers, the powerful Blackstone flows between Worcester, Massachusetts and Providence Rhode Island. As a special kind of place called a national heritage corridor, it tells the story of the river's role in starting New England's textile industry and the American Industrial Revolution.

In this relaxing trip, we will visit artful gift shopping places that would be fun and less exhausting. Here the shoppers get the opportunity to find locally made, one-of-a-kind gifts that are a pleasure to buy and give.

9:30 am  Carousels and Fine Art

Our first stop is the historic Looff carousel at Slater Park in Pawtucket. It was built in 1895 and it is one of the oldest and the few remaining stander carousels in the country.

10:30 am  Rhode Island Watercolor Society

Founded as the Providence Watercolor Club in 1896, the Rhode Island Watercolor Society is one of the oldest watercolor societies in the country with a membership that ranges from northern New England to Florida. The gallery is housed in the restored boathouse of the J.C. Potter Casino at the edge of the pond at Slater Memorial Park, Pawtucket and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

11:30 pm  Candle Factory Store

Just down the street from Slater Mill is the True Scent Candles factory store. Owners John and George make their candles from glaciers wax and with soot free burn formula. Their wide variety of affordable scented candles come in an assortment of sizes and can be paired with a unique holder. Shop for gifts or for your own home. Each month a different scent is featured with special prices.

12:30 pm   A Valley Specialty for Lunch

Enjoy lunch at Village Haven where you will be served a Chicken Family Style meal that was introduced in the Village by Italian immigrants in the 1930,s.

2:00 pm  Take a Ride on the Blackstone Valley Explorer

Cruise on the Blackstone Valley Explorer as a narrator tells a remarkable comeback story of this American Heritage River whose powerful waterfalls turned the waterwheels of the nation's earliest factories.

3:00 pm  Attracting and Feeding Birds

We will end our day at the Audubon Society of Rhode Island headquarters in Smithfield, you'll learn how to attract more birds to your backyard. The Society's Powder Mill Ledges sanctuary is an oasis from a busy shopping district just around the corner. After our short birding talk (and a bit of fresh air) you'll have a chance to visit the sanctuary's great gift shop. Here you can find something for the nature lover on your list or put your newly gained knowledge to good use.
