Blackstone River Valley - A River Story

Sample Packaged Tour Itinerary

Blackstone River Valley - A River Story

The Blackstone River is the centerpiece of the 400,000 acre Blackstone River Valley. One of 14 American Heritage Rivers, the powerful Blackstone flows between Worcester, Massachusetts and Providence Rhode Island. As a special kind of place called a national heritage corridor, it tells the story of the river's role in starting New England's textile industry and the American Industrial Revolution.

9:00 am  Morning Coffee and Migrating Birds

As you enjoy a cup of fresh-brewed coffee on our relaxing riverboat cruise, listen to the songs of migrating warblers and finches while learning about the history of the river. Once severely polluted by the dyes and other chemicals from textiles mills, the river has made an amazing come back where several species have made their home on the bank of the Blackstone and is part of the East Coast Flyway for many migrating birds in spring and fall.

10:30 am  If Stonewalls Could Talk

Your next stop is a state park in Lincoln, RI where the Blackstone River runs parallel to the remaining section of the canal that is particularly lovely. As you walk along the canal, meet the Valley's first Irish immigrants through the carefully crafted stonewalls. At the Kelly House - a brand new museum housed in a former mill superintendent's cottage along the bikepath - an expert guide and state-of-the-art exhibits bring the Valley's canal era to life.

11:30 pm  A Hearty Chicken Dinner - Valley Style

Enjoy your lunch at the Lodge where you will be served Chicken-Family Style. This is a regional specailty that includes roasted chicken, ziti, salad and French fries along with a small beverage and dessert.

1:30 pm   Audubon Society of Rhode Island

Learn about the many birds that make the Blackstone Valley their home and visit a unique Nature Shop on the 120-arce Powder Mill Ledges in Smithfield that is home to Audubon Society Rhode Island's Headquarters. The refuge has fine stands of pines, a pond and a brook. The headquarters has a library, gift shop, teacher's resource center and a bird feeding station.

3:30 pm  Afternoon Tea at Hearthside Mansion

We'll end our day exploring Rhode Island landscapes while relaxing with a cup of tea and enjoying the surroundings at the Hearthside Mansion in Lincoln.
