Cultural Heritage Celebration

The Blackstone River, one of 14 American Heritage Rivers, flows between Worcester, Massachusetts and Providence Rhode Island. The John H. Chafee Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor tells the story of the river's role in starting New England's textile industry and the American Industrial Revolution.

Celebrating the Celtic heritage of the Blackstone Valley, this week our itinerary features a day of Celtic music and dance at the 2nd annual Blackstone River Theatre Celtic Festival
Saturday, July 19, 2008.

9:00 am The Blackstone Valley Visitor Center

Your day will begin at leisurely pace, with coffee and muffins at the Blackstone Valley Visitor Center then view the award-winning film "Hidden in the Blackstone Valley" for a preview of the Valley's rich history.

10:00 am River Cruise Aboard the Blackstone River Explorer

Before heading to the festival enjoy relaxing riverboat cruise aboard the Blackstone Valley Explorer as a narrator tells the remarkable comeback story of this America Heritage River whose powerful waterfalls turned the waterwheels of the nation's earliest factories. View the Valley Falls Marsh. Hand-dug by Irish Immigrants as a mill pond, Rhode Island's largest fresh water marsh is now habitat for herons, fish and other wildlife returning to the shores and waters of the river that once was heavily polluted during the height of the industrial revolution.

11:30 am  Blackstone River Theater Celtic Festival

Enjoy Celtic music, dance, at Diamond Hill State Park, Cumberland, RI. Known for its quartz-based hill, Diamond Hill offers 427 acres for geology, hiking, and fishing. The festival features world-class Celtic musical performers and cultural entertainment for the whole family. Choose from an array of local food vendors; and for shopping pleasure, there will be a variety of arts and crafts vendors offering Celtic and local wares.
