From Farm to Factory

The Blackstone River is the centerpiece of the 400,000 acre Blackstone River Valley. One of 14 American Heritage Rivers, the powerful Blackstone flows between Worcester, Massachusetts and Providence Rhode Island. As a special kind of place called a national heritage corridor, it tells the story of the river's role in starting New England's textile industry and the American Industrial Revolution.

9:00 am  The Blackstone Valley Visitor Center

You will begin your day with coffee and muffins at the Visitor Center where you will view the award-winning film "Hidden in the Blackstone Valley". This movie will walk you through the Valley's fascinating history. Then visit the gift store across the theater and shop for authentic items that are made by local artists.

10:00 am  Slater Mill Historic Museum

Experience firsthand what it was like to take part in the American Industrial Revolution of the early 19th century. As you explore our three authentic historical buildings, garden and riverbank parkland, you'll meet Slater Mill interpreters dressed as men and women of the 19th Century - all eager to share their knowledge of the period and how the industrial revolution continues to affect our lives today.

12:00 pm  Lunch at Wright's Farm

At Wright's Farm Restaurant you will have the "Chicken Family Style". This Valley tradition started in the 1930's among the Italian immigrants. It's a hearty meal that is served only in the Valley.

2:00 pm   Cruise aboard the Blackstone Valley Explorer

Enjoy a riverboat cruise on the Blackstone Valley Explorer as a narrator tells the remarkable comeback story of this America Heritage River whose powerful waterfalls turned the waterwheels of the nation's earliest factories. Herons, fish and other wildlife are returning to the shores and waters of the river that once was heavily polluted during the height of the industrial revolution.

2:00 pm  Museum of Work and Culture

At the Museum of Work and Culture you will be told a compelling story of the hopes and dreams of the millions or so people who left French Canada to work in the textile mills of the Blackstone Valley. Explore a 19th century farmhouse, parochial school classroom and a parlor of a 1920s New England three-decker apartment house as you step into their everyday world.

3:15 pm  Ice Cream Shop

Take a walk after the boat cruise around the corner to have an ice cream on your own.

This is a guided tour.
