Valley of Varied Delights

The Blackstone River, one of 14 American Heritage Rivers, flows between Worcester, Massachusetts and Providence Rhode Island. The John H. Chafee Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor tells the story of the river's role in starting New England's textile industry and the American Industrial Revolution.

9:00 am Watercolors and Carousel Horses

Our day begins at beautiful Slater Park in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, home of an 1898 Charles Looff carousel. With 44 horses, some dogs, a giraffe, and camel, this standing carousel is visual delight. After a few rides, we'll head over to the Rhode Island Watercolor Society. Housed in Victorian-style former casino listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Blackstone Valley Historical Society will welcome warmly you to their headquarters with coffee and muffins and a tour. Built in 1807, the North Gate Toll House was the former toll house for the Louisquisset Turnpike Company.

11:45 am The Great Road

We'll take the scenic route to our next stop. And what scenery it is. The Great Road, constructed along Native American trails in the 1660s is one of the earliest roads in the nation. Your guide will point out along the way a few architectural treasures. These include two rare 17th century stone-enders, an early stone mill, a lovely Federal-style mansion and a 1704 Quaker meeting-house.

12:30 pm British Style Fish and Chips

Universally acclaimed for years as the best fish and chips in Rhode Island, you may think you've arrived in England when you stop in front of Ye Olde English Fish and Chips. You can also order baked fish and scallops and chicken too, for variety. It's been a Woonsocket institution since 1922.

2:00 pm Relaxing River Cruise

This river has quite a comeback story. Enjoy its natural beauty and perhaps spot a few herons and other wildlife as your on-board historian tells you about its remarkable resurrection from years of severe industrial pollution and civic neglect.

3:30 pm Wine Tasting at Diamond Hill Vineyards

Savor a sip of Blackstone Blush or River Valley White at this family run vineyard in northeastern Rhode Island in a beautiful garden setting. Established in 1976, Diamond Hill makes a wide range of grape and fruit wines.
